But does it really hold up to some of the greatest films ever made? That is the question I began asking myself after a tidal wave of strong, emotional reactions that many tweeters and film critics had following the memorable Oscar night (most of whom have likely never seen most of the past Best Picture winners and the past nominees they were up against). It is diverse, unique, and visionary, to say the least. ![]() One that is certainly outside the typical wheelhouse for Academy voters. ![]() Everything Everywhere All At Once is a brilliant and imaginative film. While an enormous fan of the film (it was my #2 from 2022), to that I say slow your roll. This significant accomplishment led to a disruption in the Twitterverse, as knee-jerk reactions from many of EEAAO’s advocates began declaring the movie to be one of the ten or twenty best Best Picture winners of all time. No other film has ever achieved such a feat. Directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All At Once became the first movie to win six above-the-line categories – Picture, Director, Screenplay, and three acting awards. The visceral nature of how the film is framed, cutting back and forth between DeNiro’s loud and boisterous monologues, terrified me. I was first hypnotized by Scorsese with his remake of the 1962 film “Cape Fear” (1991), which starred the Oscar-nominated Robert DeNiro and a young Juliette Lewis, whom I had known from the cult classic “My Stepmother is an Alien” (1988). ![]() ![]() To celebrate Scorsese’s visionary touch on cinema, Variety ranks all 26 of the narrative feature films of his career so far. (For more about good and bad autistic representation, Elizabeth Bartmess has an excellent series of posts that mostly focus on YA and middle grades books.) Autistic representation, when it does exist, is also almost entirely white men, so it was great to see an autistic black woman, too. An autistic character who isn’t an alien or a changeling or even a theoretical physicist. I hope that my neuroatypical readers find in Ruth the sort of representation we rarely get: an autistic character with a personality and a life, rather than an animated stereotype. It was a lot of fun to write a main character with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, as someone with ASD myself. Good autistic representation is pretty hard to find in romance novels (or anywhere, really.) That seems to be slowly changing, though, and A Girl Like Her is a great example of autistic representation done right. ![]() It’s been a while since my last post - real-life stuff has been keeping me busy - but welcome back, anyone who’s still following!
